Transporting and storing glass in cold climates and cold chain environments presents unique challenges. Temperatures as low as -40°C cause standard rubber pads to become brittle and crack, bonded components to fail, and normal steel to become susceptible to brittle fracture. If you work in northern climates, transport glass for cold storage, or are involved in Arctic construction projects, standard glass racks will not survive long-term. Our Cold Climate AGrack variant is specifically designed for reliable operation down to -40°C, with no performance loss in extreme cold.

The Challenges of Glass Handling in Cold Climates

Extreme cold destroys standard glass handling equipment in three critical ways:

  • Rubber component failure: Standard rubber pads become brittle and hard at temperatures below -10°C, lose their shock-absorbing properties, and crack under load, leading to glass scratches and damage.
  • Adhesive failure: Bonded rubber pads detach from the frame in cold weather as the adhesive loses its grip, exposing bare steel that scratches the glass.
  • Steel brittle fracture: Standard low-grade steel becomes brittle at extremely low temperatures, leading to catastrophic frame failure under load, especially during impacts or shocks during transport.

These failures result in high damage rates, frequent rack replacement, and serious safety risks in cold environments. Our Cold Climate AGrack variant solves all these problems with material and design upgrades specifically developed for sub-freezing operation.

Cold Climate AGrack: Designed for operation at -40°C

We have upgraded every component of our standard AGrack design to ensure reliable performance even in the coldest environments on Earth.

Low-temperature EPDM rubber padding down to -45°C

Instead of standard EPDM rubber, our Cold Climate variant uses specially formulated low-temperature EPDM rubber that remains flexible and shock-absorbing even at -45°C. This rubber retains all its protective properties in extreme cold, so it does not crack, harden, or lose its ability to protect glass from scratches and impacts.

Like all our rubber pads, it features an inner steel core and is mechanically bolted to the frame, eliminating any adhesive that could fail in the cold, ensuring zero metal-to-glass contact for the entire lifespan of the rack.

High-toughness Q235D steel for cold impact resistance

Standard Q235A steel becomes brittle at temperatures below -20°C, but our Cold Climate variant uses high-toughness Q235D steel, which maintains its impact toughness down to -40°C. This steel is specifically designed for low-temperature structural applications and eliminates the risk of brittle fracture even under impacts and shocks in extreme cold conditions.

All critical joints are still fully continuous welded for maximum torsional stiffness, using special low-temperature welding rods to ensure weld integrity at sub-zero temperatures.

Hot-dip galvanized surface as standard

Cold environments are often humid environments with snow, ice, and road salt that accelerate corrosion. All Cold Climate AGrack units are supplied as standard with a hot-dip galvanized surface for maximum corrosion resistance, even when in contact with road salt and constant moisture from snow and ice. This ensures a service life of over 15 years even in harsh northern and coastal winter environments.

Ideal for these Cold Climate Applications

  • Transport in northern regions: Glass transport in Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, and other regions with winter temperatures below -20°C.
  • Cold storage: Glass panels for cold rooms, cold storage warehouses, and food processing plants where racks are exposed to constant sub-zero temperatures.
  • Arctic construction projects: Mining camps, research stations, and energy projects in the polar circle where temperatures regularly drop to -40°C.
  • Winter construction: Winter construction projects in cold climates where racks are stored outdoors at sub-zero temperatures for extended periods.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Q: What is the lowest operating temperature for Cold Climate AGrack units?

Our Cold Climate variant is designed for continuous operation down to -40°C, with short-term exposure down to -45°C without performance loss.

Q: Is the folding mechanism affected by cold?

No. We use cold-resistant lubricant on all folding hinges and slide rails that remains effective down to -40°C, so the racks can be easily folded and unfolded even in extreme cold.

Q: How much more expensive are Cold Climate AGrack units compared to standard units?

Cold climate units are usually only 15-20% more expensive than standard units, due to the higher costs for low-temperature steel and rubber components.

Q: Can we obtain cold climate units in special sizes and with special load values?

Absolutely. We offer all our standard and custom AGrack configurations with the cold climate material upgrade, including the heavy 2000 kg stone variants and custom-made window frames.
