How a Wire Mesh Pallet Collar Secures Two-Layer Drum Storage on a Pallet

DRUM STORAGE ON PALLETS · MFENCE PALLET FENCE

A wire mesh pallet collar turns a flat pallet into a controlled three-dimensional load unit for 20 kg liquid drums, helping prevent rolling and tipping while preserving forklift handling, two-layer stacking, and access after stacking.

Drum storage on pallets becomes difficult when the pallet provides only a flat surface. A 20 kg liquid drum can roll during forklift handling, move when a unit is stacked, or tip when operators need to reach the lower layer. Bags and other loose loads create a similar containment problem: stretch wrap and banding may hold the outside of a unit, but they do not create a rigid perimeter that keeps every item inside the pallet footprint.

Mfence is a pallet fence built for this gap. The wire mesh pallet collar clips onto a compatible pallet and uses the pallet as its bottom surface. It is not a standalone storage cage or a pallet with an integrated base. This pallet-to-container conversion adds a rigid, visible enclosure without forcing the buyer to replace the existing pallet system. The documented application uses a 1100 × 1100 × 150 mm plastic pallet and 20 kg plastic liquid drums.

Why stretch wrap and banding are not enough for stacked drums

Wrap and strapping are useful for unitizing, but they are consumable restraints rather than a reusable load boundary. They can loosen after repeated handling, leave the upper edge of a drum exposed, and make inspection or picking slower. A wooden pallet collar or a rigid box may provide a perimeter, yet it can add weight, occupy more return space, or miss the dimensions of an existing pallet. For a warehouse handling liquid containers, the more useful question is not simply whether a load is wrapped; it is whether the load remains contained when it is moved, stacked, and accessed again. A galvanized welded wire mesh panel gives operators visibility for counting and inspection while the surrounding frame limits lateral movement. For bags or smaller loose material, the mesh opening must still be checked against the product size; an inner liner or panel may be required.

How the Mfence structure matches the pallet load

The case configuration uses a 1000 mm effective storage height for drums approximately 480 mm high. Sixteen drums are arranged per layer and two layers are loaded, with 960 mm of total product height leaving about 40 mm for the internal divider space. The enclosure uses 4 mm wire with a 100 × 100 mm mesh and a 40 × 40 × 1.5 mm rectangular tube frame in the documented design. Its bottomless design keeps the pallet responsible for the floor, while clip-on panels, stacking feet, and locating pins help form a repeatable unit. Inner and outer staggered double hinges improve the folding arrangement. Two 400 mm half-opening doors allow access to the lower area without unloading the upper layer. Four-way fork entry can be specified with the pallet and must be confirmed against the final production drawing. These are project facts, not a universal load rating, so pallet condition, fork equipment, rack use, and the proposed stacking height should be reviewed before release.

What the design changes in warehouse and return logistics

Once clipped to the pallet, the foldable pallet collar creates a more controlled logistics unit for warehouse storage, forklift handling, and stacked transport. The documented arrangement demonstrates two cages stacked with the drum load; a 2–3 layer stacking target should be validated for the specific pallet, goods, and operating conditions rather than treated as a blanket rating. When empty, the collapsible pallet collar separates into panels and folds to approximately 2300 × 1100 × 140 mm in the double-fold configuration. That gives a returnable packaging team a measurable starting point for comparing empty-return volume with rigid boxes, wooden crates, or disposable wrapping. The 1.5 mm tube version is approximately 47 kg, while an optimized 1.3 mm option is recorded at approximately 48 kg; the applicable version must be selected per project. A reusable metal pallet collar therefore supports a practical loop: clip on for containment, stack or move as a unit, open the half door for picking, then fold flat for return.

Points to confirm before specifying a wire mesh pallet collar

  • Match the collar footprint to the pallet, including the 1100 × 1100 format or a confirmed custom size, and verify four-way fork entry for the actual handling equipment.
  • Calculate the load from the product: the documented reference is 16 × 2 drums at 20 kg each, not a general maximum capacity for every pallet collar.
  • Confirm mesh opening, door height, divider space, stacking feet, and locating pins; a 100 × 100 mm mesh may need an inner panel for smaller bags or loose material.
  • Separate the working specification from the return specification: confirm the tube option, surface treatment, folding direction, and the approximately 2300 × 1100 × 140 mm empty profile before quotation.

If rolling drums, unstable bags, and inefficient empty returns are limiting your pallet flow, share the pallet size, load dimensions, handling method, and target stacking arrangement.
