Outdoor stone yards • surface finish decision
If a rack lives outdoors, the finish is not about looks. It is about corrosion resistance, maintenance burden, and whether the rack still works after rain, dust, forklift impact, and long idle periods.
Why an outdoor stone yard changes the finish decision
In an indoor workshop, a rack can survive on appearance alone for a long time. In an outdoor stone yard, the conditions are harsher: rain, moisture, dust, grit, temperature swings, and repeated forklift contact on corners and base rails. Stone yards also keep equipment parked for long stretches, which means a finish must protect steel even when the rack is standing still.
This is where many buyers make a costly mistake. Powder coating looks clean on day one, so it feels like the safer choice. But once the coating chips, the exposed edge becomes a rust starting point. Spray paint is even more dependent on inspection and touch-up. For open-air service, the right question is not which finish looks better. The right question is which finish protects the rack after the first scratch.
Three surface treatments, three different jobs
Hot-dip galvanizing is the weather-first option. Zinc protects the steel surface and keeps working even after minor abrasion. That is why galvanized Agrack is the correct choice when the rack stays outdoors, sees wet weather, or is stored close to coastal humidity, washdown zones, or uncovered loading areas.

The vent and drainage hole on the tube end matters because hot-dip galvanizing is a process-driven finish. If air and zinc cannot move through the section correctly, the coating quality suffers. In other words, a good galvanized rack is engineered for galvanizing from the start. It is not just painted-looking steel with a thicker layer on top.
Powder coating is different. It is a clean, attractive finish that performs well indoors, especially in dry production spaces where the rack is protected from weather and the main concern is appearance. On Agrack, the powder-coated version makes sense for indoor glass fabrication, controlled warehouses, and short-stay transfer points.

Conventional spray paint is the lowest-cost finish, but it is also the easiest to damage and the most dependent on maintenance. For a working yard, that often means more touch-up work, more inspection time, and shorter service life.
What you pay for is life cycle, not only paint
Outdoor buyers should compare total cost, not just purchase price. Hot-dip galvanizing usually adds upfront cost, but it can remove repeated repainting, reduce corrosion-related repair, and extend service life in exposed environments. If the rack remains in service for years under weather exposure, the life-cycle cost can be lower than a cheaper finish that needs ongoing repair.
That trade-off matters even more for a rack like Agrack, because the finish is only one part of the system. The base contact zone, the stacking points, and the panel protection points must all survive real handling. If the finish fails early, the whole asset loses value early.

That detail is important outdoors too. A glued-on buffer can peel under heat, moisture, and vibration. Agrack uses 10 mm industrial EPDM with an internal steel plate and mechanical fastening. So the glass contact protection stays where it should stay, even while the galvanized frame does the weather work.
When hot-dip galvanizing is the right answer
Choose the galvanized Agrack configuration when the rack will sit outside, move between open loading zones, face humid or coastal weather, or spend a lot of time parked instead of constantly in motion. That is the proper use case for hot-dip galvanizing.
Choose powder coat when the rack is mainly indoor, the environment is dry, and visual finish is the main concern. That boundary is simple: powder coat is suitable indoors; hot-dip galvanizing is the weather-first answer for outdoor yards.
If you are comparing finishes for a stone yard, send us the actual working condition: outdoor or indoor storage, rain exposure, coastal distance, forklift frequency, and how long the rack stays idle. We will help you map the finish to the duty cycle instead of guessing from appearance alone.
