A-Frame Glass Racks

For specialized glass fabricators, a rack isn’t just a storage tool—it’s an insurance policy. When you are moving soft-coated Low-E units or heavy laminated glass, a single micro-scratch from a bare metal upright can ruin a $2,000 sheet instantly. This guide explores why standard steel racks fail to protect high-value glass and how using a purpose-built system with integrated rubber composites and ratchet security can eliminate transport damage completely.

The “Invisible” Killer: Vibration and Soft Coatings

If you process Low-E (low-emissivity) glass, you know the coating is incredibly sensitive. The biggest enemy isn’t always a direct impact; it’s vibration. During transport—whether across the factory floor to the IGU line or on a truck to the job site—glass sheets naturally shift and vibrate against the rack.

On a standard painted steel rack, this microscopic movement acts like sandpaper. By the time the glass reaches the site, the coating is compromised.

The Material Science of Protection

To solve this, we don’t just “paint” the steel. We engineer the contact points:

  • The Base (Bottom Pad): We use a specific composite of Plywood and Industrial Rubber. The wood provides a firm, flat base that won’t deform under ton-heavy loads, while the rubber layer prevents the glass edge from slipping or chipping.
  • The Uprights (Vertical Support): As shown in the image above, every vertical steel face is lined with high-durability, non-marking rubber strips. This creates a “floating” effect where the glass never touches metal.

Preventing “Chatter” in Laminated Glass Transport

Laminated glass presents a different challenge: delamination. If a pack of laminated glass isn’t secured tightly, the sheets “chatter” (slap against each other) when the forklift hits a bump. This shockwave can cause the glass to separate from the PVB interlayer.

Gravity alone isn’t enough to hold them. You need active pressure.

Steel Limit Rods provide an unshakeable external barrier.

The Double-Lock Security System

We implement a two-stage securing mechanism to freeze the load in place:

  1. Ratchet Straps: Unlike simple ropes, our integrated ratchet belts allow you to apply precise, high-tension pressure to pull the glass pack tight against the rubber-lined uprights.
  2. Steel Limit Rods (Stop Bars): As seen in the image, we use a solid steel bar that slots into the base. This acts as a physical fail-safe barrier. Even if a strap loosens, the glass cannot tip or slide off the rack.

Why “Full Seam Welding” Matters for Safety

You might wonder, “What does welding have to do with scratches?” Everything.

Cheap racks use spot welding. Under the load of 3,000kg of glass, spot-welded frames flex and twist. This structural flexing causes the rack to move independently of the glass, creating friction points that lead to breakage.

At Mgrack, we use Full Seam Welding on all structural joints. The frame is rigid. When the forklift moves, the rack and the glass move as one solid unit. Zero flex means zero friction, which means zero scratches.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I replace the rubber strips if they wear out over time?
Yes. While we use industrial-grade rubber designed to last for years, the strips are glued and mechanically fastened. They can be stripped and replaced without needing to buy a new rack, keeping your maintenance costs low.

2. Is this rack suitable for transporting glass inside a truck?
Absolutely. This model is specifically designed for logistics. The combination of the Limit Rod and Ratchet Straps ensures the glass remains stable even during highway braking or cornering.

3. What is the maximum load weight for the protection series?
Our standard heavy-duty model is rated for 3,000kg (approx. 6,600 lbs). This is sufficient for dense packs of 19mm glass or heavy granite slabs.

4. Do you have a solution for Jumbo size Low-E sheets?
Yes. We manufacture “L-Frame” and “A-Frame” racks in custom dimensions to accommodate Jumbo sheets (e.g., 3.2m x 6m) commonly used in commercial architectural projects. Contact us for custom specs.

5. Does the plywood base rot if used outdoors?
For outdoor use, we recommend our specialized models where the wood is treated or replaced with a water-resistant polymer pad. However, for standard indoor/truck use, the plywood provides the best shock absorption.
